After the many months of revision and preparation, the wait is over today for students across Cumbria as they receive their GCSE results.

Councillor Elaine Lynch, Cumberland Council’s executive member for lifelong learning and development, said:  “Congratulations to all the students across Cumberland who have received results today.

“Results day can bring a mix of celebration, excitement, and varied emotions. Whatever your results today I want to congratulate you on all your hard work up to this point, and I wish you all the very best as you move towards your future through further education or employment.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported our students as they worked towards these exams and beyond. So, a special thank you to the headteachers, teachers and teaching assistants, parents and carers.”

Keswick School

Keswick School is celebrating its best ever set of GCSE results today.

It said more students have secured a grade 4 or above than in any previous year in the school’s history, including during the pandemic, with results jumping up by almost 10% from last year.

As Keswick School is the Language Hub for the North West, the school said it was delighted that of 145 students who took a modern foreign language, 60% of students studying French achieved grades 9-7 and 37% of students studying German achieved the same standard, with 16 grade 9s.

The success follows a whole school Ofsted inspection in April this year where the school was graded as outstanding in every category.

Head Simon Jackson said: “I am hugely proud of all our students. They have achieved some outstanding results. The GCSE grades awarded today reflect their hard work and dedication.

“They have been a pleasure to have as part of our Keswick School community. It is also great to see such fantastic GCSE outcomes following the full Ofsted inspection when the school was graded as outstanding in every category in April of this year.

“I would also like to pay tribute to our exceptional specialist teaching and support staff. They are an incredibly committed group of staff who always go the extra mile to support our young people. It is through their care and encouragement that students at Keswick School become confident and highly articulate young people.”

Rev Charles Hope, chair of governors, said: “Results day is always a special day for students, parents and staff. The excitement of receiving the results and sharing news is palpable.

“The results of our Keswick School Year 11 pupils are a wonderful achievement for all our students. The results also reflect the dedication and commitment of our teaching and support staff and their great efforts on behalf of the students.

“The support of parents and carers too is invaluable to their children’s success. Congratulations all round! We look forward to welcoming so many of these year 11s back into the sixth form!”

Ullswater Community College, Penrith

Headteacher Stephen Gilby said: “At Ullswater Community College we are proud to serve our children, their families and the communities they come from.

“Results this year demonstrate yet again the resilience of the students and their dedication to their studies.

“Their achievements are all the more special for the challenges many families have faced in recent times and we congratulate them all on the manner in which they have conducted themselves in what continues to be extraordinary times.

“We know that the majority of students will be pleased with their results and will have the keys to get them to where they want to be in September.

“Their results reflect their hard work, their dedication and the support they received from their families and teachers.

“My congratulations to all the young people of Ullswater and across the county on their achievements today and I wish them all the very best for the future.”

Greg Key, head of year 11, added: “The children of our wonderful school are far more than the sum of their grades, we want to celebrate every individual who has shone, for all sorts of reasons, during their time here at Ullswater.”

“It has been an enormous privilege to get to know them and their families as well as be a part of their lives. You’ll always be a part of the UCC family so stay in touch and we’ll always be here to support you whenever you need us.”

Dallam School, Milnthorpe

Oliver Pearson and mum Claire collected his results together

Staff and students at Dallam School in Milnthorpe are celebrating the achievements of 170 students who sat their GCSEs and BTECs this summer.

Among those with strong academic results are:

William Fuller: 9s in Biology, Computing, English Lit, Mathematics, Physics and Spanish, and 8s in Chemistry, English Lang, and Technology.

Oliver Pearson: 9s in Drama, History, Spanish, Combined Science, and 8s in Combined Science, Maths, RS and English Lang and Lit.

Rebecca Lowe: 9s in Biology, Physics, and Technology, 8s in Chemistry, English Lang, History, Maths and Spanish, and a 7 in English Lit.

Other notable achievements include Eleanor Patterson, who secured 8s and 7s across the board, and Annie Searles, who earned excellent grades, including 9s in Chemistry and Physics.

Oliver Pearson said, “I’ve really enjoyed studying for my GCSEs at Dallam. The experience with my friends and teachers has been brilliant.” Oliver is planning a future career in the Foreign Office or politics following sixth form.

The results have opened up many career paths for the students. Jamie Walls was thrilled to get the grades needed for his first step into the motorsport industry.

Ben Todhunter, drummer and guitarist, said: “These results are exactly what I was hoping for as I’m planning a music career.” He’s off to college: “I’m looking forward to meeting other musicians who have plans to be in a band, too.”

Headteacher, Steven Hennberry said:  “We are so happy to see our students celebrate their progress and reap the rewards of all the skills they have gained at Dallam.

“Alongside individual’s top academic results, Dallam School has performed strongly in French, Art, Science and Mathematics and has seen even stronger performance across Food Technology and Health and Social Care. This is good news for the local hospitality and care sectors, which need a boost to the workforce.

“We are incredibly proud. Seeing so many students supported by their parents and carers as they collected their results was good. A collaborative home and school partnership is absolutely the best way to support our young people. We wish them all well and look forward to seeing plenty of familiar faces in sixth form in September.”

Windermere School

Windermere School pupils celebrated their success and hard work as they collected their GCSE results. Year 11s again achieved a value-added score of + 0.67, meaning that on average, students gained two thirds of a grade more in each of their GCSEs compared to the national average.

33.8% of all grades were 7-9 (A*/A) and 84% 9-4 (A*-C). In addition, our Year 10s taking one year science courses, achieved an average grade of 5.7 with 18% achieving the top grade 9 and 39% achieving grades 7-9.

Windermere pupils almost all take a wide range of subjects at GCSE, covering all areas of the English Baccalaureate which is excellent preparation for the breadth of the International Baccalaureate offered at sixth form.

Head Frank Thompson said, “After the fantastic achievements of our Year 13 in the International Baccalaureate and vocational examinations, it is really exciting to see a new cohort joining us in the sixth form having done so well at GCSE.

“We are a non-selective school, and these results show the progress achieved from the hard work of both pupils and staff. Pupils ranging from the most academically able to those who find academic studies more challenging thrive at Windermere due to our small classes and individual attention.”
