Carlisle United don’t have lift-off on their return to League Two and it continues to be a struggle for Paul Simpson’s side.
They crashed to a 3-0 defeat at MK Dons and had no excuses for a performance which was short of what is required to be competitive in the fourth tier.
They were second best for most of the game against a home side who had gone into the game still looking for their first win of the season.
They had made a slow, tentative start but they did take the lead on 18 minutes when Callum Hendry turned in a cross from Aaron Nemane.
The Dons increased their lead on 31 minutes when Connor Lemonheigh-Evans’ sent Nemane away and his cross found Gilbey who was left with a simple tap in.
Carlisle’s on-loan pair from Bournemouth Daniel Adu-Adjei and Dominic Sadi were closest to salvaging something for Carlisle but home goalkeeper Tom McGill made two good saves.
Time was almost up when Carlisle conceded a third when Joe Tomlinson’s shot from a good pass by Tommy Leigh’ crept into the bottom corner.
Carlisle have now only won four games away from home in the last year, and badly need a pick-up ahead of next Saturday’s home game with Tranmere Rovers.
