After the disappointment of Saturday’s loss to Ashton United, Workington Reds bounced back in style at Borough Park.
They became the first team to beat joint leaders Hebburn Town in the League this season and in doing so registered their first home win.
A crowd of 812 enjoyed a combative contest, which will have a sequel on Saturday when the two teams meet again in the FA Cup.
Hebburn played little constructive football, but it was the ball over the top in the first half which caused Reds problems.
Bailey Adamson was wasteful with the first one, blazing over after getting away from Tom Wilkinson but he made no mistake the second time after 24 minutes.
He evaded the attentions of both Wilkinson and Jordan Little before firing home past Alex Mitchell.
Workington played all the measured, neat and tidy football, but on most occasions the final ball let them down.
It was looking as though it was going to be one of those days for Mark Fell’s men but on 79 minutes they drew level.
Josh Galloway went down the right and his cross was met on the run by Jamie Allen, no more than six yards out, and he fired past the despairing dive of keeper Kieran Hunter.
Three minutes later and Reds were in front. The provider was Allen with a low cross which found substitute Ben McCarron.
The youngster sorted out his feet before firing home to a huge roar from most of the 812 crowd and the delight of his team-mates.
Minutes later Hebburn were reduced to ten men when Robbie Spence was shown a second yellow for a trip on the lively Kai Nugent.
Reds were able to see out the closing stages of the game with a flurry of intent from Hebburn, pumping balls into the box which were dealt with effectively by Mitchell and his defenders.
It’s all to do again on Saturday when Hebburn are back for the FA Cup and it promises to be a tasty affair if this was the trailer!
