Late start at Lowick for hounds

Last night saw the first in a series of trails at Lowick which was due to hold a three-race meeting.

Unfortunately the first trail was late to slip and as the night had started to draw in it was too dark to slip the last trail for the restricted hounds so it had to be cancelled.

The senior hounds had got things off to a good start with 14 runners and Huntsman’s Rebel was favourite along with Miterdale Honesty.

Connections of Huntsman’s Rebel were looking to extend her winning run and continue to close the gap on the two leading hounds in the championship, Silver Dream and Rodney Raider.

Over the last couple of weeks Huntsman’s Rebel has pulled back their lead as the type of running has been more to her liking with more fell trails to choose from.

As the hounds came back onto the finish, as expected, it was Huntsman’s Rebel who had a good few yards on the rest of the field.

In the end she won easily for Denise Bland and co to take her tally now to nine wins with just one point separating her from the top two hounds.

Ron, for Tom and Ryan Bell, finished well in second place with Miterdale Honesty in third for Sophie and Katie Steele.

Huntsman’s Quartz was fourth for Ian Donaldson with the Dearham team of Joseph Abram and Nicola McMaster travelling down to Lowick and claiming fifth and sixth with their two hounds Sarah Jane and Silver Streak.

Next were the open pups with a slip of 11 and Huntsman’s Time was in the field as Denise and her kennel looked for a double.

However, as they came onto the finish it was the in-form Minnie Million, who had also made the long trip down to Lowick, who came through to win from Huntsman’s Time.

The little bitch is certainly in form. much to the delight of Joy and Brian Lister with Sophie Steele and co’s Miterdale Rumble finishing in third place.

Christine Brownlee’s Maeve was in fourth place while James and Ava McClelland’s Baroness Ava finished in fifth having doubled up from her run on Wednesday at Ennerdale Show. Ben, for Tom Bell, took the sixth ticket.

Trails for the weekend see a four race meeting at Shap on Saturday and then a four race card at the annual Loweswater Show on Sunday.

With the weather set to improve over the next few days and especially over the weekend, hound trailing should be a little more pleasant for hounds, owners and punters than of late.
