There were four Fred Conway Cumberland Cup second round ties on Saturday and there was no shortage of tight action.

West Lancashire League Premier Division outfit Cleator Moor Celtic were on the road and travelled to face Maryport Athletic, the Cumberland County League Premier champions.

There was clearly the risk of an upset for Celtic but they managed to edge past their lower league opponents 2-1 thanks to Luke Close and an own goal. Alec Little netted for Maryport.

Aspatria, from the Cumberland County League Premier, hosted Bransty Rangers from Division One of the Cumberland County League and what a tie it was.

It ended 4-4 with Andrew Trestianu and Malcom Graham both scoring twice each for Aspatria and Bransty gaining parity through Lewis McCartney, Tom Smith, Keelan McKeown and Nate Frankland.

Aspatria eventually won the match 6-5 on penalties to book themselves a quarter final place.

Cumberland County League Premier Division side Keswick were 2-1 winners against Westmorland League Division One club Fellside United after Alfie Westand Luke Mason scored their goals. Jack Baker scored for Fellside.

In an all Westmorland League tie, Division Three outfit Langwathby United were on course for an upset against Wetheriggs United from Division One after Mason McAneney scored in the 25th minute and put them 1-0 up.

However the match was abandoned in the 55th minute after a serious injury to Wetheriggs United player Ronan Humphrey and this tie will be replayed in due course.

There was also a fixture in the Cumberland County League Division One as Workington Juniors beat Whitehaven Miners Social Development 7-0 with goals coming from Jack Nixon, Harry Watson, Macauley Sharp, Aaron Lister, Tyler Harrell and Niall Melton with also one of the opposition gifting an own goal.
