Cleator Moor Celtic had to work hard to beat County League champions Maryport Athletic at the weekend.
But manager Gareth Agnew hopes the 2-1 victory, against a good side, can ignite their West Lancashire League season.
They moved off the bottom of the table without playing a game. Whitehaven’s 6-1 defeat to leaders Tempest United gave their West Cumbrian neighbours a worse goal difference.
Agnew, who took over the side at the start of the season, is looking forward to following up the Fred Conway County Cup win in a home game on Saturday against Blackpool Wren Rovers.
The Seasiders will come to the Moor in fifth place in the table and their four defeats have all come away from home.
Celtic, meanwhile, are one of only four sides already through to the quarter finals of the Fred Conway County Cup – joining Aspatria, Penrith and Keswick.
Workington, the holders, entertain Whitehaven tonight and Unisun Athletic v Greystoke play on Saturday. It’s Carlisle United v Carlisle City next Tuesday (Nov 19) and Wetheriggs v Langwathby isn’t until Saturday, November 30.
