Women’s Over-35 football event

Teams from across Cumbria took part in the second Women’s Over-35 event this season at Penrith AFC.

The festival provided an opportunity for teams to have a run out and catch up in the Nat Broad Physiotherapy-sponsored programme.

Carlisle Ladies Walking Football Team, Calthwaite Women and Workington St Joseph’s Ladies were joined by Westmorland to play a number of games. Spirits were high despite the cold and sometimes wet weather throughout the afternoon.

Playing 20 minute games across the 5-a-side pitches, it gave players a great workout with some flowing football on display.

Participants left the pitches at the final whistle with smiles and handshakes for their opponents, continuing the feel good factor developing in this format of the game.

Helen Aitchison, women & girls football development officer, said “We’re delighted that from the Over-35 programme we now have three new teams created offering women an opportunity to play outside the traditional format of football.

“We’re keen to see more women join in and there has never been a better time to either come back into football or try it for the first time.

“With so many women aged 35 and over involved in grassroots football, whether that’s as parents, coaches or spectators we’re hoping to grow the game further.

“We will be supporting local grassroots clubs to combine their membership and bring these women together to allow them to play in a fun and friendly environment. There is support available to begin this provision so please get in touch!”

Players also wore Rainbow Laces to show their support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in football.

Penrith AFC were once again hosts, providing a fantastic environment and facility for the players to enjoy their football.

With three more events this season, there are plenty of opportunities for women to play with and against women aged 35 and over.
