HGVs banned from travelling through Cumbrian villages as A595 work gets underway

HGVs over 7.5 tonnes are banned from travelling through two Cumbrian villages as work to improve a section of the A595 gets underway.

HGVs will be restricted from Grizebeck and School Road in Kirkby-in-Furness to reduce congestion during the construction of the £23.3 million improvement scheme for 18 months.

HGVs will only be allowed to access the area if providing a service to businesses and properties in the vicinity.

Access for all emergency services and buses will also be maintained throughout.

Westmorland & Furness Council said: “This measure will bring immediate relief to drivers by significantly reducing congestion on the narrowest sections of the A595.

Grizebeck improvement scheme

“By limiting heavy goods vehicles during the construction period, traffic flow will improve, making everyday journeys safer and more convenient for all road users.

“The restriction is a critical step toward delivering a much-needed new single-carriageway road that will eliminate these pinch points entirely.

“Once complete, this new route will provide long-term solutions to the congestion challenges that have affected the area for years.

“We have been working with haulage firms to ensure they are aware of the restriction criteria and clear signs have been installed along the route.

“Permanent on-site crews will also ensure HGVs do not proceed through the restricted area.”
