Carlisle’s Sands Centre, Carlisle, will remain closed until at least Friday as ongoing repair work to the temporary canopy continues.

The temporary canopy above the centre’s roof was damaged during Storm Eowyn on Friday.

GLL said it continued to work closely with Cumberland Council and has put temporary measures in place to minimise disruption.

Members are able to access alternative facilities at Better leisure centres across Cumbria during normal working hours.

Sheepmount Athletics Stadium has extended its opening hours to run from 8am to 7pm while the repair work is carried out, where members can utilise the gym and running track.

A reduced exercise class timetable will be available from this evening at the former St John Henry Newman Catholic School, Lismore Place, alongside a limited gymnastics programme.

Access to all other centres is included in the current membership agreement at no extra charge for those who hold membership at the Sands Centre.

Tom Rice, Cumberland partnership manager, said: “Our focus is to ensure the safety of the public which is why the Sands Centre remains closed this week.

“We’re working as rapidly as possible with partners to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum and have implemented measures to ensure our members have alternative access to fitness facilities. In addition, we are currently exploring options to extend memberships and will release further details as soon as we are able. We shall provide further updates on the reopening of the Sands Centre later this week.”
