The £5.25 million project to revamp Carlisle’s Greenmarket and Market Square is getting ready to enter its next phase.

Cumberland Council said the project area has been expanded by an additional 1,500 square metres.

It has been funded by the Future High Streets Fund, Cumberland Council and United Utilities and forms part of Cumberland Council’s £100m regeneration programme for Carlisle city centre that includes the improvements to Carlisle Railway Station and the public realm schemes at Devonshire Street and English Street.

The Market Square and Greenmarket regeneration project is designed to create an attractive, multi-functional space that creates a new focal point in the pedestrianised area, encourages activity that supports shops and businesses and creates a greener city centre, the council said.

The next phases of work will involve adjustments to the hoarding perimeter and will continue until summer.

Pedestrian access will be maintained between construction areas and on Castle Street to ensure ease of movement for visitors to the city centre.

The final phase will focus on completing the Market Square with new paving and street furniture while enhancing Greenmarket and Castle Street.

Unique natural stone features and greenery will also be added.

Cumberland Council said it was committed to supporting city centre businesses during the transformation.

To encourage residents and visitors to explore the area, footpaths will be expanded wherever possible, and efforts will be made to reduce narrow or unwelcoming spaces near businesses.

Eric Wright Civil Engineering Ltd, the project’s contractor, continues to work closely with businesses to minimise disruptions and collaborate on delivery arrangements.

Cumberland Council added: “The public is advised to navigate the city centre with caution, as temporary walkways and routes may change during construction.

“To ensure everyone’s safety, please follow posted signage, adhere to temporary pathways, and be mindful of construction vehicles and equipment. Site personnel will be available to provide guidance as needed.

“This regeneration project marks a significant step in reshaping Carlisle into a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike. Cumberland Council wishes to thank the community and local businesses for their continued patience and support while the enhancements are being made and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
