Foundations have been laid for Maryport’s new Promenade café.

Part of £12 million of central government-funded regeneration projects in the town, it is due to open its doors this spring.

Leader of Cumberland Council Mark Fryer, said: “This is going to be another great reason to visit Maryport, whether you are a local or a tourist.

“What a fantastic place to sit and watch the world go by. Add this to the new skate park, the new Shiver Me Timbers play area, the transformation of Maryport Activity Centre, the lovely Shipping Brow Gallery, and the coast is the place to be this summer.

“In addition to all of this, there is the new Maritime Museum which will be opening in Christ Church, the new event space on the harbourside, and the new arts and entertainment hub opening in the former Carlton Cinema. This is an exciting time.”

The operator of the new café will be announced in the coming weeks.

Ricky Fee, director of Workington-based contractor Stobbarts Ltd, which is building the café, said: “The installation of the raft foundation this week is a major step forward in the creation of a seaside cafe on Maryport Prom as it is one of the most important parts of any construction project.

“Stobbarts is delighted to be involved in the multi-million pound transformation of the town and I am sure that this café will prove to be popular with residents and visitors alike, with the stunning views over the Solway adding to its appeal.”
