Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team was called out at the weekend after a member of the public thought they found a piece of ordnance on a West Cumbrian beach.
The team was called to Maryport yesterday, Sunday March 23 in the morning.
Working with Cumbria police, a cordon was put in place while the item was inspected.
The team said: “Photos were sent back to our operations centre for sharing with bomb disposal, who confirmed our view that thankfully the item was not ordnance and didn’t present any danger to the public.
“The item was recovered and disposed of.
“From time to time, around the shoreline of the UK and here in Cumbria, we do have old military ordnance and marine time expired pyrotechnics wash up or become uncovered in shifting sands on our beaches.
“While on this occasion it wasn’t explosive, the first informant who reported this done exactly the right thing and helped ensure public safety.”
Later on, the team was called to Maryport pier after reports of concern about a member of the public.
Police, North West Ambulance Service and Maryport Rescue were also called and the incident was brought to a swift and safe conclusion.
