A group of Carlisle yarn bombers are planning to mark VE Day with a colourful tribute.
The aim is for the steps of Carlisle’s Old Town Hall to be transformed by a yarn bombing installation featuring hundreds of crocheted and knitted flowers in patriotic red, white, and blue.
Helen Fisher, director of Carlisle Matters CIC, said: “We want to create a vibrant display of flowers because VE Day is truly a celebration.
“It’s a day to remember the courage and sacrifice of a remarkable generation while celebrating the freedoms and opportunities they protected for us.
“It’s our personal thank you, bringing the community together in a colourful and joyful way.”
The yarn bombers previously brightened Carlisle in November, when their poppy displays adorned The Lanes Shopping Centre, the Market Cross, and the Old Town Hall.
Carlisle Matters CIC invites local knitters and crocheters to contribute red, white, or blue flowers — each approximately palm-sized — to the display.
Donations can be dropped off at local Community Centres, The Lanes Shopping Centre Carlisle Control Room, the Civic Centre, or Carlisle Tourist Information Centre by the end of April.
Carlisle Matters CIC will also host a large-scale community event, Show & Tell, at Bitts Park in Carlisle, on May 18, where the yarn bombers will again decorate the park in vibrant colours. Details can be found on the Carlisle Matters Facebook page.
Julie Minns, Carlisle MP, said: “I am pleased that our community has the fantastic resource of the Carlisle Matters yarn bombers to help prepare the city for our VE and VJ Day celebrations.
“This joyful, handmade display beautifully honours the local people whose bravery and personal sacrifices secured the peace and freedom we enjoy today. My heartfelt thanks go to Carlisle Matters and all the Yarn Bombers involved in creating this stunning installation.”
