A project to transform an historic part of Carlisle city centre into luxury living accommodation is nearly complete.
Work to convert Portland Square – an area built in the 1870s – into luxurious homes while preserving the history of the square is set to be complete in the coming months by Cumbrian developer Halston Homes.
The Portland Square South development is a mix of five to six bedroom homes and two-bedroom apartments in the Grade II listed exterior.
The first phase of the development sold out within a month of the sales launch.
Rosie Cemmick, sales negotiator at Fine & Country Cumbria, said: “Portland Square South represents the final phase of Halston Homes’ renovation and redevelopment of this landmark historic square in Carlisle, and it’s no surprise that these homes have been so popular.
“The stunning Grade II-listed buildings have been transformed into modern and efficient homes in the heart of the city and include historic features of the original buildings to offer a truly unique experience for homeowners.
“Portland Square is one of Carlisle’s most beautiful areas and the development offers stunning views of the park.”
Portland Square was originally set outside the historic and confining walls of old Carlisle on meadow land originally owned by the Aglionby estate and was a statement of place and prosperity.
The area includes 5 Portland Square, a home built by the then mayor of Carlisle, Joseph Huthart, and Hamilton House at 15 Portland Square, which was built as a private girls’ school.
An open day will be held on Friday, May 2, between 11am and 3pm, and people will get the opportunity to view an available townhouse and two apartments.
