A ‘mystery flare’ led to a false alarm call out for a Lake District rescue team.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team were called out on Thursday July 3 at around 1.05am to a report of a flare above Wythop woods.

The caller had reported seeing the flare ‘go up’ from Wythop woods over the A66 and towards Bassenthwaite lake.

Despite the small amount of information, as the caller was genuinely concerned, the team dispatched a team of two to check the area.

The team saw no further activity and could hear no whistles or calls for help. The duo also drove the forest track through Wythop and saw no signs of anyone in distress.

The team were stood down in the early hours after around one hour and 55 minutes.

A team spokesperson said the mystery flare may have been a meteor – as one was spotted at various locations across Scotland around the same time the caller reported seeing the ‘flare’ above the woods.
