Windscale travelled across to Willington’s excellent facilities yesterday for their first game of the 2025-26 Wearside League season.
With a decent sized crowd supporting the home side, it provided a good atmosphere for the contest throughout the game, with the hosts eventually claiming the spoils with a 3-1 victory.
Windscale produced a poor performance in the first 45 minutes, Willington claiming most of the possession and dictating play without creating any real scoring opportunities.
The Cumbrian visitors had little composure with the ball and Willington eventually broke the deadlock in the 41st minute.
A move down the right saw Liam Dunn through on goal, following a slick back heel, then guiding the ball into the net beyond Windscale keeper Joe Rumney.
The Atoms were much better at the start of the second period and deservedly levelled the score in the 49th minute.
A cross from the left, delivered by debutant Travis Fyfe, found Lewis Sekirk who powered a header into the net from six yards.
Windscale began to dominate play from this point creating a number of chances but nothing that really troubled the Willington custodian.
Willington regained the lead in the 64th minute. A long ball forward caught the Atoms exposed on the right and Sam Green ran onto the ball and curled it inside the far post.
The hosts virtually sealed the three points in the 77th minute. Adam Metcalfe found himself acres of room on the left, picked up the ball and ran through giving Rumney no chance with his strike.
The Atoms never gave in and Willington probably were worthy winners due to the visitor’s inferior first half performance.
Windscale face another difficult fixture when they take on Easington on Wednesday at the Falcon Complex, kick off 7.45pm.
