Carlisle United rounded off their pre-season programme with a 2-0 win at Chester.
Both former league clubs they now operate outside with the Blues preparing for the National League while their hosts are in National North.
Two second half goals gave Carlisle the win but in the end it was a comfortable victory and a useful workout for Mark Hughes’ men.
Both goals came in a five-minute spell when Elliott Embleton scored from the penalty spot and then Tom Leak added an unfortunate own goal.
A great through ball from Embleton had the Chester defence in trouble and when Linney gathered and drove for goal he was brought down by Fin Shrimpton.
Cumbrian referee John Mulligan pointed straight to the spot and although keeper Lewys Banjamin got a hand on Embleton’s penalty he couldn’t stop it.
The second followed quickly when central defender Leak tried to clear a dangerous cross from Linney but from inside the six-yard box sliced it into his own net.
