Barrow opened the League Two campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat at Chesterfield.
Although the hosts dominated possession 63-37%, the Bluebirds had 10 shots to Chesterfield’s seven. But the telling stat was the only one of Barrow’s was on target.
Indeed that didn’t come until deep in the second half when Innes Cameron went through on goal but home keeper Zach Hemming made a timely save with his legs.
Dilan Markanday scored the only goal of the game right on half time when he got in a near post header from Dylan Duffy’s cross and through a deflection it evaded keeper Wyll Stanway.
The Spireites thought they should have had the opportunity of a second from the penalty spot when they claimed Ryan Stirk was fouled in the area but the referee saw nothing wrong.
Both managers will be looking for improvement from their sides when they see their next league action on Saturday with Barrow hosting MK Dons and Chesterfield travelling to Cheltenham.
