A week after signing his first professional contract with Carlisle United, teenage defender Hayden Atkinson has joined Workington Reds on loan.

West Cumbrian Atkinson, 17, signed for Carlisle until 2027 after impressing a lot of people at Brunton Park.

He will join the Reds squad for this afternoon’s NPL Premier Division game at Hednesford.

The youngster has been with the Blues since under-10 level and has been a regular standout in the youth team in recent years.

Academy Manager, Steven Rudd, a former Reds assistant manager said: “We are absolutely delighted for Hayden — this contract is a well-deserved reward for the consistent hard work and high-level performances he delivers every single day.

“His dedication, both on and off the pitch, has been outstanding and is a true credit to himself and his family. He embodies the professionalism and commitment we want to see in all our young players.

“It’s important that he continues to grow, both as a player and as a person, as he takes the next steps towards a successful career in the professional game.”

Defensively Reds were found wanting at Stockton on Tuesday when they conceded six goals, three of them in the last 15 minutes.

They face a Hednesford side that has won both games so far with Tuesday’s home win over Warrington Town watched by over 2,000 fans.

Reds go into the game bottom of the Premier Division on goal difference with five other clubs still to open their accounts as well.
