Two people were taken to hospital and a horse died after it collided with spectators at Cartmel Racecourse.
The incident happened on Monday August 25, during the third race of the bank holiday meeting.
The racecourse said the horse, named Wbee, suffered a sudden heart-related condition immediately prior to the second-last hurdle and collapsed while racing.
A spokesman added: “This veterinary event, confirmed by the treating veterinary team, caused the horse to deviate from the course, where it came into contact with a group of spectators.
“On-site medical teams responded immediately and two people were taken to hospital for further treatment.
“The attending senior racecourse vet was in attendance in a matter of seconds but sadly the horse Wbee passed away as he arrived.”
The racecourse added that course officials remaine in regular contact with the relevant authorities regarding the condition of the two people, while ensuring their privacy.
