Windscale followed up their home victory on Saturday with another win when they travelled to play third-placed Washington last night.
Following the departure of a number of players at the end of last season, and three indifferent performances at the start of this one, manager Stephen Fawcett has wasted little time in assembling another squad that could potentially make its mark in the Wearside League.
The Atoms were a little hesitant at the start allowing Washington to take the lead as early as the 8th minute.
It was Reece Blakey who swooped to tap the ball into an empty net following some indecision by the Atoms defence.
Earlier in the season this would have raised a few concerns for the Atoms management however, for the next 15 minutes or so there was very little to get excited about with the visitors beginning to settle into the game.
Both teams attempted to create scoring opportunities, but neither was able to fashion an end product.
It was captain Reece Fretwell, returning to the line-up after missing Saturday’s fixture, who lit the fuse to the Windscale recovery.
Following the award of a free kick in the 24th minute, he floated the ball onto the head of Matty Pierce whose looping header evaded Washington custodian Craig Foster to bring the visitors level.
Windscale took the lead in the 32nd minute with Pierce registering his, and the Atoms, second goal.
A well delivered corner kick by Jayden Fulton saw Pierce jump above everyone and power his header into the back of the Washington net.
Following this neither team were able to affect the score line with the visitors retaining their 2-1 advantage at the break.
As anticipated, Washington who were a Northern League outfit last season, came out for the second half using their experience to dominate possession.
The Atoms early season fragility appears to have been replaced by a more resilient attitude throughout the team.
There were a couple of concerning moments on the hour mark when Atoms keeper Levi McAdam flung himself high to his right to deflect a shot over the crossbar for a corner.
Shortly after he made another block and collected the rebound to prevent a score.
Washington laboured to create many clear cut chances and their frustrations were evident when Denver Morris, one of their substitutes, was shown a red card in the 80th minute following an altercation.
Windscale managed to see out the game despite a lengthy period of added on time to pocket all three points.
They are on the road again on Saturday to take on Shotton Colliery, never an easy place to go and which will further test the Atoms resilience.
