Workington Comets will have to wait for their opportunity to peg back Berwick Bandits in their final Championship meeting of the season.

They have 12 points to make up after last night’s 47-35 defeat at Shielfield but today’s return at Northside has been postponed.

The heavy rain showers of yesterday coupled with the terrible forecast predicted to hit today the Comets management took the decision to postpone the home meeting with the Bandits.

Even last night’s meeting was affected with heat 15 not raced because the curfew had been brought in to end the contest early.

Although the heat leaders were well-matched – with 22 points for both sides – there was a difference at reserve.

Notably through the efforts of Jack Smith (11 + 2), along with Dayle Wood (3 + 1) they doubled the contribution from the Workington pair of Jacob Hook (6) and Vinnie Foord (1).

Yet in the reserves race it was a 4-2 to the Comets with Hook winning and Foord taking third.

Former Workington rider Peter Kildemand, also had a major role in the Berwick victory, riding at four where he scored 9 + 1.

Kildemand had two heat wins in that total with team-mates Drew Kemp and Jonas Jeppeson also collecting a couple of race victories each.

The Comets were best served by skipper Troy Batchelor (8 + 1) and Tate Zischke (8), who had two race wins each.

Jye Etheridge, against his former team, and Hook were the other heat winners for the Comets.

The Comets could have finished a little bit closer but Antti Vuolas retired and Hook fell in heat 14 which left the Bandits with a 5-0.

Earlier there was a 3-2 to the Comets in heat 11 when Batchelor won from Wood but after Nick Morris had fallen it was Fraser Bowes who took a tumble at the start of his last lap and neither was able to finish.

However, 12 points is within the Comets compass on their own track but when that will take place is still to be decided.

  • Berwick Bandits 47: Drew Kemp 6; Sam Hagon 2; Jonas Jeppeson 10 + 1; Peter Kildemand 9 + 1; Nick Morris 6; Dayle Wood 3 + 1; Jack Smith 11 + 2.
  • Workington Comets 35: Troy Batchelor 8 + 1; Fraser Bowes 5; Tate Zischke 8; Antti Vuolas 1; Jye Etheridge 6 + 1; Jacob Hook 6; Vinnie Foord 1.
