A Cockermouth gallery was selected among the best galleries to showcase at this year’s British Art Fair.
Castlegate House Gallery, owned by Steve and Christine Swallow, is recognised for its focus on modern British masters, such as Cumbria’s Sheila Fell, Norman Cornish, Frank Auerbach, Winifred Nicholson, and Percy Kelly, while also championing younger artists, including Alice Campbell.
The fair, at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea over the weekend, is one of the most prestigious events dedicated to modern and contemporary British art, bringing together only the best galleries from across the UK.
Founded in 1988, the British Art Fair showcases outstanding works of 20th century and contemporary art.

At this year’s fair, Castlegate presented a carefully curated exhibition including works by contemporary artists Stefan Orlowski and Craig Simpson. Craig also joined Steve at the fair throughout the weekend.
Steve said: “We may be based in Cumbria, but we’ve always believed that great art knows no boundaries.
“To be exhibiting alongside the country’s most established galleries and artists at the British Art Fair, something we have proudly been doing for many years now, is both an honour and a statement that a gallery from the Lake District can stand confidently on one of the art world’s biggest stages.”
