Cumberland FA’s winners of the John Twentyman Spirit of Cumberland football has been revealed as Bee Unique FC.
As winners they received the full club FA Respect the Standard merchandise, and a £100 voucher from kitlocker.com.
Founded by the Bee Unique autism charity, and run entirely by passionate volunteers – many of whom are SEND parents – Bee Unique FC is a pan disability football club.
Bee Unique FC isn’t just about football – it’s about changing lives, raising awareness, and giving children opportunities they wouldn’t have in mainstream settings.
Their work embodies the spirit of grassroots football.
The award honours the legacy of John Twentyman, who was a true footballing gentleman, and as such they look to celebrate individuals or teams who have demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, memorable moments of integrity, or a consistent commitment to positive football throughout the season.
The final winner was determined by combining public and panel votes equally.
There was a tie for third place between the Penrith goalkeeper Aaron Taylor and John Henderson of Whitehaven Miners Social FC.
They each receive £50 vouchers from kitlocker.com.
Before competing in the senior County Cup final, Aaron took time to engage warmly with the children who had been invited to act as ball girls and boys.
After the match, despite the disappointment of finishing as runners-up, Aaron gave one of the children his medal, turning the day into an unforgettable experience for that child
John has been outstanding in his dedication and selfless service to Whitehaven Miners Social Football Club and the wider community.
Following the death of youngster Jay Cartmell, and then club stalwart Lee Jenkinson, John was one of the coaches who stepped forward to support grieving players and families. His compassion and leadership helped guide the club through an incredibly difficult time.
Runners-up for the main award were Castletown JFC U12 Athletic in recognition of their outstanding display of sportsmanship, compassion, and community spirit.
In a moment that transcended the game, the team, its coaches and spectators immediately rallied around legendary referee Bill Martin, following a nasty collinson with a player ensuring his well-being was the top priority.
The club received some club FA Respect the Standard merchandise and a £50 voucher from kitlocker.com.
In addition, each year the executive team at the CFA look to select someone for special recognition.
Someone who has stood out and whose dedication to the game in Cumberland embodies fair play, respect, and the very spirit of football.

So as well as announcing the public award winners the County FA also announced its winner of the John Twentyman Spirit of Cumberland Football’s Special Recognition Award as Ross Mattinson.
This award was presented to Ross for his work as a Referee, Carlisle United ED&I Ambassador, Neurodiversity and Autism Champion.
Ross embodies the spirit of grassroots football through his dedication to fairness, inclusion, and resilience.
As a Cumberland FA county referee, Ross consistently upholds the values of respect and integrity on the field.
Off the field, he serves as Carlisle United’s ED&I Autism Representative, leading initiatives such as sensory packs and awareness workshops to make football more accessible for neurodiverse fans.
This season has been particularly challenging for Ross, both on and off the pitch.
Despite facing abuse and adversity, he has remained steadfast in his commitment to the game and to his advocacy work.
His courage in speaking out and continuing to serve as a role model for others, especially those with autism, is a testament to his strength and character.
Ross’s influence goes far beyond football. His continued advocacy for autism awareness and inclusion in football is not only courageous, it’s transformative.
Ross is helping to shape a future where every individual feels seen, heard, and valued in the game.
His work truly reflects the spirit of the John Twentyman Award: making football better for everyone, no matter the obstacles.
Thanks to The FA, the CFA were delighted to let Ross know that he has been invited to attend the next England Men’s Open Training Session at St George’s Park, where he will be able to watch part of the training session and attend a Q&A before an opportunity to take photos with the players.
