From enchanting illuminations and houses decorated for Christmas to crafting and storytelling, there’s a whole host of family-friendly events on offer from the National Trust this festive season.

Looking for ways to make the most of the season and Christmas holidays? For low-cost and free activities here’s a round-up of what’s on:

Winter at Sizergh returns for 2025, with new elements on the enchanting light trail.

See the house decorated for Christmas, try your hand at self-led festive crafts and enjoy delicious festive food in the café.

The shop will be open late, so if you need some gifting inspiration you can browse for locally sourced stocking fillers.

Booking is essential, and tickets start from £4 for National Trust members.

Step back in time at Townend

Escape the hustle and bustle of the festive season and step back in time with Christmas at Townend – the fire will be roaring and the house will be decked with traditional festive foliage.

Feast your eyes on the festive food on display and see a Victorian cooking presentation, which will be running on Fridays and Saturdays until December 20.

Carol singing at Allan Bank

For carol singing and festive harp music head to Allan Bank in Grasmere on various days in November and December – see the website for details.

The house will be decorated with natural evergreen foliage and a Christmas tree, there’s an open fire and self-led seasonal craft activities for children.

Festive crafting at Hawkshead’s Tabitha Twitchit’s bookshop

If you’re planning to visit the Hawkshead Christmas Fair, there is festive crafting to be enjoyed at Tabitha Twitchit’s bookshop on December 6 and December 7 – join the team and make a gift for a loved one or something to take home for yourself.

Winter Solstice

For fresh air, join a Winter Solstice Circle in the woodland above Wastwater on December 21, honouring the longest night and welcoming the rebirth of the sun.
