A silent vigil by the Red Rebel Troop has taken place in Carlisle city centre, writes Chris Jones.
The activists, dressed entirely in flowing red garments to symbolise spilled blood, processed slowly in single file through the pedestrian area before taking up position outside Barclays Bank today, Saturday, October 25.
Their solemn presence, set against bright afternoon sunlight, formed a striking image.
Carrying the message “Drawing a red line for Gaza,” the activists remained silent throughout, hoping to prompt reflection among passers-by on the ongoing conflict in the region.
Sal Cawley, a member of the Red Rebel Troop, explained the intention behind the event.
“The vigil highlights the need to end the bloodshed and mourn the loss of life in Gaza. The terrible violence that has taken place cannot be ignored,” she said.
Cawley described the group as typically focused on environmental issues.
“We are from across Cumbria, normally climate activists marking the blood of the Earth and warning about what is happening with the climate.
“We have joined with the Palestine Solidarity group to draw this red line and to remind people about what has been lost.”
