Whitehaven could not have been given a more difficult task without a manager and with several players having left the club.
They had to travel to Eagley, near Bolton to take on the unbeaten West Lancashire League leaders with 10 wins in 12 games.
The 7-1 scoreline might sound a real trouncing but an inexperienced side put up a spirited performance.
In view of what had happened during the week it was a brave effort to offer hope for the future against lesser opposition.
Joe Carney scored for Whitehaven who play Workington Reds on Wednesday night in the Fred Conway County Cup.
Cleator Moor Celtic continued their unbeaten run with an excellent and dramatic 5-4 win at Poulton.
Celtic were leading 4-2 with 10 minutes left but the home side fought back level.
Then in the fifth minute of added time Josh Palmer completed his second-half hat-trick to win it for Celtic.
Lucas Caige had scored the Celtic’s equaliser on 43 minutes and an own goal put them in front three minutes into the second-half.
Two quick fire Palmer goals pushed the Cumbrians into a 4-1 lead before the hosts rallied.
Here’s what Celtic’s Gareth Agnew had to say:

Millom put up a prominent display against second-in-the-table Haslingden St Mary’s before going down 2-1 at home.
It was a good effort by the south Cumbrians in difficult conditions and they probably deserved at least a point.

They had gone in front on 50 minutes with a spectacular goal from Callum High.
But St. Mary’s won it with goals in the 70th and 80th minutes.
Milnthorpe Corinthians did not have a fixture.
