Among the applicants for the vacant manager’s job with Workington Reds was one from an 11-year-old Carlisle schoolboy!
So impressed were the Workington directors with Paul Stewart’s determination to land the job, they invited him to Borough Park for last Tuesday’s home game with Gainsborough Trinity.
Apparently Paul’s salary demands were well within the club’s parameters – just £25 per week – although, because he didn’t drive, he did ask for a chauffeur driven car to get him to training.
He also said he might not get to some training sessions if the burden of homework was too great.
Vice chairman Richard Lewthwaite, invited the youngster to Borough Park for the Gainsborough game.
Paul was given a brief tour of the stadium and met the players and staff in the dressing room before having the obligatory photograph taken on the pitch with a club scarf.
His thoughts on the 2-1 defeat were not recorded as Reds still haven’t won a home game this season.
The Reds board members are expected to name their new manager very shortly.
Paul bears the name of a former England international who wore the Workington colours during their famous North Western Trains League title win in 1998/99 and part of the following season.
In a distinguished career at the top Stewart had played for Blackpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Wolves, Burnley, Sunderland and Stoke City.
