A bumper crowd of 1,212 enjoyed the Stevie Scholey testimonial game last night at the Fibrus Community Stadium.
After Stevie’s Town Select side had beaten a Community Invitation team 34-14, a shirt auction raised more money for the veteran, with his own top going for £1,550.
Probably the best news for the fans was announced later when the 35-year-old forward revealed he had signed another 12-month contract with Town.
Talking to Cumbria Crack, Scholey said: “It was a mental day and I can’t thank enough the people who came to watch the game, who supported the auction, and to the people on my committee who have organised everything.
“Then of course there were the players on both teams who served up a very good game of rugby league.”
Stevie didn’t manage to score a try for his side but he did kick two goals and was happy to confirm that he had kicked for Maryport in his amateur days.

Jake Carter scored two tries for Stevie’s Town side and there were touchdowns for Callum Farrer, Guy Graham, Matty Henson and Spener Fulton.
There was a particularly nice touch when Stevie included Maryport’s Keenan Winter in his Town side, although he’s never been a pro.

Stevie explained: “I’ve known Keenan for a while and when I’ve watched Maryport he’s always impressed me as one of their best players.
“So when he wasn’t included in the Community squad I invited him to join my side.
“There was another reason, too, as his grandfather George Petre was Town’s kitman for many years.

“I know how proud George would have been to see Keenan playing for Town on Derwent Park.”
Cumberland ARL chairman Peter Gilmour said: “it was a really good night enjoyed by everyone. Im pleased to say the Community team gave a very good account of themselves.”
Xendon Callander scored two tries and Connor McCrickard also got over the Town line.
Lewis Moore kicked a goal.
Stevie’s testimonial runs until February when the final event is likely to be a big name speaker for a sportsman’s evening in the Washington Central.
Earlier this week, Scholey chatted with our John Walsh about the match.
