A major search has taken place this evening after there were reports of a small aircraft in distress.

Police, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and aircraft experts have been involved following a single report from one person at 4.30pm with concerns about a microlight.

The Coastguard Rescue helicopter was also called out.

Cumbria police said: “This was believed to be in the rural area around the A689 and A69.

“Subsequent enquiries suggest what was seen may have been a paraglider.

“At this time nothing has been found that would indicate anyone has been hurt or any landing has taken place that would cause further concern.

“As well as searches of land, officers have also spoken to local aircraft training and airfield representatives, who have no reports of any aircrafts or paragliders being in distress.

“The public may see a larger-than-normal presence of emergency service personnel in this area as a result.”

Cumbria police said today, Sunday November 9, that a paraglider has since contacted officers to say he was the subject of this incident.

There is nothing further to suggest anyone has been hurt, police said.
