Workington St Joseph’s women’s walking football team capped their remarkable progress with an appearance at national finals.
It proved a memorable experience for the players, competing at St George’s Park the home of the FA where legends of the beautiful game train and play.
They had made it to the FA walking football cup finals where the team was backed by a very large and vocal group of supporters.
Out of just under 200 women’s teams who entered this season’s competition, Workington finished joint 4th on the day after one win, one draw and 3 defeats in the league stages of the event.
In one of the games they managed a very respectable 2-0 defeat against the eventual winners, Bolton Arena.
In order to get to the national final, the team had to win both a country qualifying game and also a North East regional game too.
Kate Smith, founder and club captain, said: “In just 17 months our women’s walking football team has grown into a thriving, supportive club building confidence, friendship, and a real sense of belonging.
“We are passionate about growing women’s walking football. Our goal is to inspire more women across Cumbria to give the game a go and discover the joy, friendship, and confidence it brings.
“Reaching the final only highlights this even further.”
The club is now aiming their sights on not only returning to the finals next season, but aiming to go back stronger and improve on their debut appearance in the finals.
If anyone would like to join the club, they accept women in their 30s and over to train at St Joseph’s School, Workington every Friday from 6pm to 7pm and can be found either on Facebook or by emailing [email protected].
