Tyler Magliore answered the call to arms from Workington Reds’ new boss Billy Barr.
However, the 26-year-old defender who made his Workington debut on Saturday, wondered what he had let himself in for.
He told Cumbria Crack: “I didn’t know where Workington was and had to look it up on a map.
“When I saw where it was at, and how far from where I live in Yorkshire, I thought what has Billy got me into here?”
But it’s a sign of the respect and trust he has in the new Reds manager that he travelled and made an impressive debut.
He won the sponsors man of the match award in a 3-2 win at Borough Park against Hyde United.
It was the first home game that Reds had won in the League this season.
It was pointed out to the Bradford-born Magloire that a certain Ruben Jerome had travelled from his base in Huddersfield to train and play for Reds over three years.
It’s highly unlikely that will be the case here as Magloire is still looking to get back into league football.
He said: “That was the arrangement. Billy said I would be in the shop window playing for Workington and we would see how it went.
“I haven’t been playing and that was my first full game for two months.
“When I was released by Northampton I went on the PFA scheme and I was at Bradford City on trial.
“I had played under the City manager at Motherwell but I didn’t get offered a contract.
“I really enjoyed the game on Saturday nd hope that I can help the Reds climb the table.
“I knew Billy when I was at Blackburn and he was in charge of the Under-23s and I had a lot of respect for him.”
He had joined Blackburn as a 15-year-old, progressing through Academy and Development sides until making his Championship debut in March, 2019 – a 3-0 win over Wigan.
Over the next three years he had loan spells with Rochdale, Hartlepool, Motherwell and Northampton.
In 2022, after his release by Blackburn he signed a permanent three-year deal at Northampton.
Unfortunately his second season there was a non-event as he suffered knee ligament damage.
He returned to action last season, playing in 21 games before his release.
While on trial with Bradford City he was a member of the squad for a pre-season tour of Austria.
