An experimental and ambitious exhibition will be held in Barrow.

The Artist Lab, which features 14 artists from or connected to Cumbria, will be held at Signal’s newly refurbished gallery spaces.

It marks the culmination of two years of artist development, experimentation, and deep ecological enquiry as part of Signal’s Artist Development Lab.

The exhibition is the public highlight of the programme – an innovative space for artists to explore the intersection of digital art and environmental themes in contemporary art practice.

Since 2018, the labs have nurtured a new generation of artists through immersive workshops, mentoring, and site visits to Barrow’s landscapes and locations.

Signal said: “What makes the Labs particularly ground-breaking is their long-term approach to artist development.

Giles W Bennett

“The calibre of mentors and contributors has been exceptional. Sessions have benefited from the expertise of partners spanning FACT Liverpool (Charlotte Horn), Abingdon Studios (Tom Ireland), Tate Modern (Michael Raymond), Jewellers (Jamie Jenkinson and Amy Dickson) and renowned artists including Sue Gill, the late John Fox, Marshmallow Laser Feast, Artfly and Mishka Henner.

“Each lab cultivates a community of artists whose forward thinking works mark them as ones to watch.”

The landmark show is the first multi-disciplinary group exhibition in the new venue, which Signal said marked its new chapter and the area’s next generation of artists.

The exhibition, which runs from November 27 to December 20 and January 6 to January 31, features photography by Johannes Pretorius, Liam Collins and Giles W Bennett, moving image from David Haley & Laurence Campbell, Ellie Hoskins and Jennifer McMillan, sculpture by Tom Mortlock-Jackson and Cj Pitcher and work by Debbie Yare, Mel Galley & Núria Rovira Terradas, Zoe Forster and Natalie Sharp.
