Kendal Town were the only winners among Cumbria’s three Northern League sides.
But Carlisle City were praised for their performance at title hopefuls Shildon before falling to two late goals.
Penrith also produced an excellent second-half performance against another leading side West Auckland but couldn’t find an equaliser.
Kendal won 1-0 at Newcastle Benfield, avenging a 3-1 home defeat on the first day of the season.
Josh Winder scored after only four minutes and that proved to be the winning goal.
It kept the Mintcakes firmly in third place, just a point behind Shildon.
Shildon had found Carlisle City a hard nut to crack in their clash at the Denham Metals Stadium.
City gave them plenty to think about in the first-half and whenever they did come under pressure on loan goalkeeper Thomas Randall was equal to it.
It took Shildon to the 77th minute to take the lead through Billy Greulich-Smith and they didn’t add to that until the second minute of stoppage time when Adam Lennox added the second.
Penrith had got off to a flier at home to West Auckland when Conor Hammell fired them in front in the second minute with a fine strike.
But they allowed West Auckland into it and Cobi Jones levelled on 22 minutes.
In time added on at the end of the half Craig Moody put the visitors ahead.
Penrith completely dominated the second-half with the game virtually played in the visitors’ half.
There was one bizarre moment when the referee awarded Penrith a penalty for a clear handball and then changed his mind and the spot kick wasn’t awarded.
To complete a frustrating afternoon for the Bonnyblues they had Alex Potts sent off in the third minute of stoppage time.
You can hear below what Dan Kirkup and Jim Nichols thought of the performances below.
