A Cumbrian artist represented by Cockermouth’s Castlegate House Gallery has appeared on BBC’s Countryfile.

The programme, which aired on BBC One on Sunday, explores JMW Turner’s connection to the Lake District and included a significant segment on painter Stefan Orlowski, whose work is currently on display at the gallery.

Countryfile and its presenter Vick Hope highlighted Stefan’s creative process, the influence of the Cumbrian landscape on his practice, and his personal interpretation of the region’s changing weather and terrain.

Stefan’s landscapes are painted largely plein air.

His work is known for its intensity and raw connection to place, offering a gritty, authentic view of Cumbria rarely seen in contemporary depictions of the county.

The painting featured in the programme, The Dark Glow of the Mountains, is one of seven new works by Stefan currently on show at Castlegate House Gallery.

Steve Swallow, co-owner of Castlegate, said the gallery was delighted to see Stefan’s work featured to a national audience and believed his approach added an important voice to the tradition of Lake District landscape painting.

“So often, Cumbrian landscapes are depicted through a bucolic lens, but Stefan paints landscapes out in the open; he paints what he sees but also what he feels, how the landscape impacts him visually and emotionally; it’s gritty and raw.

“It’s great to see his work showcased on BBC’s Countryfile – a respected show, bringing some great awareness to both the work of JMW Turner and Stefan.”
