An event to mark the 280th anniversary of sieges at Carlisle Castle will be held next week.
North-East re-enactors John Sadler and Bev Crowley will visit Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life on Saturday December 13 as General ‘Hangman’ Hawley and Lady ‘Colonel’ Anne Mackintosh.
Between 11am and 3pm, the Jacobite re-enactors will be in Alma Block, with period weaponry and kit to highlight the situation in Carlisle in 1745 and explain to visitors about this period of history.
John said: “This is a pivotal moment in British history and Carlisle Castle was besieged twice – once in November by the Jacobites, and once in December by the Hanoverians.”
The museum’s Nick Hazlewood added: “Not only does the Castle’s strategic position on the border make it very important during this period but the following year, the 34th (Cumberland) Regiment of Foot found itself facing the forces of Bonnie Prince Charlie at the Battle of Culloden.”
The 34th Foot later amalgamated with the 55th Foot to become the Border Regiment.
Normal admission applies to the site for the event.
