
Workington’s Veterans Club produced a stand-out performance in this week’s L&L Property Contractors Snooker League.
They ended Division One leaders Station Road Club’s unbeaten start to the season with a superb 3-2 home victory from 2-0 down.
Tom Thompson got the visitors off to a strong start in the opening frame, punishing Mark Tunstall with accurate scoring and solid safety play to take it 64-17.
In frame two Darren Lawson then continued the charge for Station Road with a one-sided 72-3 win over Paul Johnston for a 2-0 lead.
However, the Veterans fought back admirably starting with Mark Tatton’s composed 46-24 victory over John Teasdale to claw one back.
Then with a convincing 572 success over Shane Lowrey in the next the Vets Club pulled it back to 2-2.
In the decider Station Road’s current county champion Kevin Kirkham produced some red hot potting to lead 39-0 but just a few shots later five times county singles winner Kevin Basnett showcased his class with a magnificent clearance of 73 to seal an 82-39 victory and a memorable 3-2 Vets comeback win.
Station Road remain top of Division One on 26 points, while the Vets move to 19 points, also in Division One.
Division One’s United Club A continued their fine run of form with a convincing 4-1 win away over Division Two’s Maryport Social.
Dave Chapman set the tone for the visitors with a steady 55-18 win over Sal Cakmak, before Darryl Walters doubled the lead, edging Ryan Ismay 56-36 in a close second frame.
United A’s dominance continued as Clive Lister compiled a consistent display to defeat Andrew Skidmore 70-17 and secure the match at 3-0.

Maryport’s Stuart Shepherd pulled it back to 3-1 with a 58-17 win against Mark Suitor but United A ended the match strongly as Andrew Mitchelhill beat Andrew Scott 65-28 to galvanise the away victory.
United A stay hot on the heels of the Division One leaders, now on 22 points, while Maryport hold a third placed Division Two position on 15 points.
Whitehaven’s Rack Shack stormed to the top of Division Two with a stunning 5-0 home whitewash over Workington Legion in a dominant team display.
Adam Morilla opened with a tidy 51-24 win against Simon Tootle before Phil Denvir made short work of Adam Hodgson with a 61-15 triumph.
Peter McAvoy then extended the Rack Shack lead with a solid 52-35 victory over Lewis Straughton.
In the fourth frame Neil Dougherty showed great form in a 58-35 win over Dan Hallam, and Lee Dougherty completed the whitewash by comfortably beating Gary Burdon 56-19.

Rack Shack now top Division Two with 20 points, while Workington Legion remain at the foot of the table on eight points.
Finally, Workington’s United Club B continued their strong recent form with a clinical 4-1 win at home to Division Two rivals Workington Golf Club.
The Golf Club had put the first point on the board, however, as Phil Sorfleet defeated Adam Sowden 64-25.
Richard Kirkham kick started United B’s charge in frame two with a tense 49-41win against Mark Cowen for parity at 1-1.
Stephen Harrison then added a second point with an equally narrow victory in a 49-42 win against Bryan Walker before Shane Tallentire put the result beyond doubt in frame four with a composed 60-33 win over Lewis Tilley to make it 3-1.
In the final frame United B captain Stephen Jackson topped off the match victory nicely with a 87-46 over Mark Carruthers in a very satisfying United B performance.
United B sit second in Division Two with 17 points, while Workington Golf Club fall to fourth on 13 points.
