A good neighbour who cares about his community has won an award.
Neil Walker, of Harraby in Carlisle, won the High Sheriff’s Neighbourhood Watch Award.
Neil joined the local neighbourhood watch scheme and began litter picking, planting bulbs, and keeping his neighbourhood tidy, all in his own time and at his own expense.
Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen met Neil recently.
Mr Allen was part of the selection committee that chose Neil as the winner.
Mr Allen said: “Strong communities are built by residents who want to see their area thrive and Neil is a shining example of this.
“Neil joined Neighbourhood Watch this and didn’t wait for anyone else to take the lead.
“He represents what’s best about Cumbria: people who act out of pride, compassion, and commitment.
“They remind us that real change starts not in headlines, but in communities — with people who care enough to make things better.
“Tackling anti-social behaviour and building safer neighbourhoods isn’t just about policing — it’s about people who care, who take action, and who bring others with them.”
