With the group qualifying stages of the individual knockout reaching the penultimate set of fixtures, the Derwent Valley Asbestos Removals individual snooker league saw a series of dramatic encounters.
In Group A, Ryan Ismay (+15) produced a strong performance to defeat Mark Tunstall (+24) 4–1.
The opening frame saw Ismay take the early lead, holding his nerve to edge past Tunstall in a tactical start to the evening.
However, Tunstall responded brilliantly in the second, finding his rhythm with solid scoring and assured positional play to level the match.
From that point on, however, Ismay took control, claiming the third frame after capitalising on Tunstall’s missed opportunities.
Ismay then extended his advantage with another comfortable win in frame four.
With victory already secured, Ismay maintained his focus in the final frame, closing out the match in style to seal a comprehensive 4–1 result, putting him to the Top of Group A.
In Group B, Peter O’Hagan (+1) delivered a display of steady break-building and consistency to defeat Andrew Carter (+44) by 4 frames to 1.
Carter begun the match strongly, producing some fine scoring to take the opening frame comfortably.
He continued to score well, but a resilient O’Hagan maintained his discipline to claw back the deficit and take the frame to a black ball conclusion and ultimately convert to level the match.
Carter again scored steadily in the third, but a timely 34 break from O’Hagan proved to be the deciding factor to take him into a 2-1 lead.
O’Hagan carried the momentum onwards with a classy break of 56 further extending his lead and guaranteeing the match win.
The final frame proved to be a high scoring affair, but neither player could establish a telling advantage.
For the second time in the evening the frame came down to a final black showdown, and it was O’Hagan who calmly seized the chance to edge out the frame sealing a commanding 4-1 overall match result.
Also in Group B, Kevin Basnett (Scr) was in imperious form overcoming Dave Chapman (+29) with a convincing 4–1 win.
Basnett set the tone from the onset, producing a dominant display of scoring to take the first frame.
Frame two quickly followed with Basnett delivering breaks of 39 and 32.
Chapman responded excellently in the third to halt the momentum and give himself a chance of a comeback. However, a break of 46 helped Basnett quickly regain control and extend his lead to 3-1.
Basnett maintained the momentum in the final frame rounding off a 4-1 victory and an evening of fluent scoring also ensurong progression to the semi-final stage.
In the final Group B match Stephen Jackson (+33) swept aside Chris Hunter (+30) by 4-1 with a commanding performance from start to finish.
Jackson set the tone early on, firing in a break of 30 to comfortably take the opening frame. Hunter responded well in the second, compiling a steady display and edging the frame on the final black to level the match at 1–1.
From there, however, it was all Jackson. Producing fluent cueing and tight safety play, he surged ahead with an emphatic win in the third frame and then followed up with a break of 31 for a comfortable fourth.
Despite a spirited effort from Hunter in the final frame, Jackson sealed the match with a confident performance in the fifth to secure the match 4–1 overall and guarantee progression to the semi-final stage.
