Runners and riders for vacant Barrow manager’s position

Who takes over from Andy Whing as manager at Barrow?

There have been some familiar names quoted by various bookmakers and one or two have been deleted from their odds lists.

One was Steve Evans, a much-travelled manager, who has just been named as boss of struggling League One side Bristol Rovers.

One that has not disappeared and is prominent in most lists is former Reading manager Noel Hunt, who is shortest odds along with current interim manager Neil McDonald.

Hunt was with Reading FC from December 7 2024 to October 26 of this year after helping them to a solid 7th place last season. They are currently 18th but have lost several key players this time round.

Recently introduced into the betting has been Darren Ferguson, son of Sir Alex, who recently left Peterborough after a fourth stint in charge.

Leighton Baines, the long-serving Everton full-back, still part of the Goodison Park staff is another interesting inclusion, along with former Swansea boss Garry Monk; former Northampton Town manager Jon Brady and as an outsider Mike Williamson, who had a brief spell in charge of Carlisle United last season.

It seems as though the Barrow board might be prepared to give McDonald time to prove his capabilities with the squad after they produced a fine come-back to earn a 2-2 draw at Gillingham on Saturday.

Neil McDonald is 5/2 joint favourite with Noel Hunt; Darren Ferguson 11/4; Leighton Baines 3/1; Garry Monk 7/2; Jon Brady 8/1; Mike Williamson 10/1.
