A Carlisle man has appeared in court accused of stabbing a stranger on a city centre street.
Marc Proudfoot, 33, of Stanhope Road, faces charges following an incident on Botchergate at around 10.05pm on Sunday, January 4.
One charge alleges that he unlawfully and maliciously wounded a man, intending to cause him grievous bodily harm, on that date.
When Proudfoot appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court this afternoon, he formally entered no plea to that charge.
Prosecutor Diane Jackson alleged: “Police officers were called to Botchergate to a report of a male who had been stabbed in the side.”
The incident occurred close to the junction with Portland Place.
Of the injured man, Mrs Jackson said: “He is still in hospital and is awaiting an operation.”
Investigations were being carried out to assess any intestinal damage, added the prosecutor.
Proudfoot is further charged with possession of a knife in the aftermath of that incident; and also the theft of knives and scissors from an Asda store in Carlisle earlier that day.
During today’s court hearing, Proudfoot spoke from the dock to confirm his name, date of birth and address.
The wounding charge is classed as indictable only, which means it is so serious that it can only be dealt with by a judge at a crown court.
Proudfoot’s case was sent to Carlisle Crown Court. He is due to appear there for a plea and trial preparation hearing on Friday February 6.
In the meantime, until that next court appearance, he has been remanded in custody. No bail application was made by his solicitor, Chris Toms.
