LISTEN: Workington Reds draw at Prescot Cables

Workington have never lost in eight visits to Prescot’s Hope Street stadium but the more worrying statistic to emerge after this 1-1 Premier Division draw is their inability to see out games in the later stages.

Conceding goals from the 85th minute onwards has cost them fourteen points this season with Cables compounding the frustration following an 88th minute equaliser from defender, Bradley Moonan.

Reds had gone in front with a fine goal in the fifth minute and were the better team for much of the afternoon.

Steven Rigg and Ceiran Casson linked up well on the right and Daniel Ogwuru was quick off the mark to convert the low cross for his first Workington goal.

The visitors play in the final third was their only downfall. Too many opportunities were squandered because the delivery into the area didn’t match the cross which produced the opening goal.

Rigg twice had the ball in the net but both ‘goals’ were disallowed upon the intervention of an assistant referee’s flag.

And with very few clean sheets recorded in a season of struggles, one goal is never enough for bottom-of-the-table Reds. Prescot, by their own admission, were second best for much of the contest but they forced a few late corners and that lifted the crowd.

When Moonan forced home that late leveller, the home supporters left the ground relieved, in contrast to the frustrated Workington faithful experiencing yet more disappointment.

But manager Billy Barr was pleased with the performance and said: “Yes, we are disappointed not to have won but that’s us back to what we were prior to the Hebburn defeat.

“Some of the Prescot supporters said we deserved to win but the performance is the biggest thing and we have to take a large chunk of that display into Saturday’s home game against Ilkeston.”

Before then, Barr’s side have a Cumberland Cup tie v. Unisun Athletic on Tuesday (7.45 pm) to play, when several changes will be made to his starting XI.
