St Helens captain Matty Lees will miss the start of the new Super League season after picking up a knee injury at Workington last Friday.
The prop forward had to retire for the night with what has been described as a nasty injury.
Saints head coach Paul Rowley has told the club’s website that Lees picked up the injury in the first half at the Fibrus Community Stadium.
Rowley said: “Matty will be out for several weeks. He’s sustained a nasty injury to his knee. It won’t require an operation, so that’s the positive.”
Lees has replaced Jonny Lomax as Saints skipper for 2026 and the team is preparing for a tasty opener to the new Super League season at Warrington on Friday night.
Although they finished fifth last season they have strengthened significantly in the winter, as witnessed during their 98-2 demolition of Workington in the Challenge Cup.
