New Barrow manager Dino Maamria got off the mark with a win in his first match in charge, a 1-0 victory at home to Colchester.
There was great relief at Holker Street when Niall Canavan fired home the only goal of the game in the 85th minute.
He was ready to drill home after a free-kick had been headed back across goal.
That success ended a losing run of six matches and lifted them five points clear of the League Two drop zone.
The Bluebirds almost went in front after 12 minutes when Colchester’s Jack Payne almost steered a cross from Barrow’s Rekeem Harper into his own net but it slid just past the post for a corner.
After Barrow’s Ben Jackson had one close just before half-time the visitors had a good chance in the 57th minute. Samson Tovide was in a great position close-in but fired well wide.
Will Goodwin thought he had put the visitors ahead but his header was ruled-out and Alex Newby had a chance for Barrow but shot weakly at the keeper Matt Macey.
After Canavan’s late strike there was one last chance for Colchester to salvage a point but home keeper Wyll Stanway denied substitute Teddy Bishop.
