Barrow were unable to follow up Saturday’s win over Colchester when they went down 1-0 at home to long-time relegation zone dwellers Harrogate Town.
New manager Dino Maamria had got off to a great start with that victory and would have expected something similar against net to bottom Harrogate.
But the Sulphurites deserved their half-time lead although it was Barrow who were on top after the break but just couldn’t find a way through.
The only goal of the game came after just seven minutes when a poor back pass from Joe Thompson was collected by Ellis Taylor and with goalkeeper Wyll Stanway stranded he fired home from a narrow angle.
Harrogate have been improving as this proved to be their second win in three unbeaten games from which they have gathered seven precious points.
It keeps them second bottom but only two points the three teams above them and they include Barrow. While bottom side Newport had a fine 3-1 win at play-off chasing Salford and they are just a point behind Harrogate.
Harrogate could have gone in at half-time with a 2-0 lead but Stanway made an excellent save to deny Taylor a second goal.
The Bluebirds were much better after the changeround and went close when Charlie McCann rattled the bar with a free-kick from just outside the area. Even then the rebound presented Elliot Newby with a chance but he blasted over the top.
Newby also fired wide when another opportunity presented itself and Harrogate had to defend grimly to hold onto their slender lead until the final whistle. It was their first away win since September.
