There’s a strong representation of Cumbrian players taking part in an England Community Lions trial in St Helens today.
It’s at Under-19s level and the eventual target for Cumbrian head coach Gary Hewer is to reduce the current squad of 40 down to 21 ahead of the European Championship in France in August.
“We have a pathway in place from Under-17s to Under-18s through to Under-19s and this group of players did particularly well last year in a European Nations competition in which they beat a strong French Academy side, comprised of players with professional clubs.
“Two of the Cumbrian lads involved, Xenden Callander (Lowca) and Trent Ruddy (Barrow Island) have since turned professional with Whitehaven and Barrow respectively.

“I don’t consider that a bad thing because we are trying to give the lads the best chance we can to make the professional game,” said Hewer.
This final trial is being held at the Pilkington Recs ground and will feature 12 Cumbrians from six community clubs.

The players are: Bailey Worthington (Distington); Dylan Morris (Egremont Rangers); Keir Starkie, Preston Molly, Ryan Templeton, Ellis Holliday (all Hensingham); Rio Walker, Jack Barker (both Millom); Jaiden Tallantire (Seaton Rangers); Rhomen Alick, Thomas Clark, Billy Joe Towers (all Wath Brow Hornets).
