
Guisborough Town stayed second in the Northern League’s Division One with a 3-1 win on Wednesday against Penrith.
They are five points behind leaders Shildon but do have three games in hand, and are 16 clear of third-in-the-table Whitley Bay,
They had the game virtually won at half-time when they took a three-goal lead into the changing rooms.
James Frazer put them ahead on five minutes and Kurtis Howes doubled the lead seven minutes later from the penalty spot.
It was a poor start by Penrith and they seemed to have rallied until Guisboroiugh scored a third on the stroke of half-time through Howes.
It was a better effort from Penrith in the second half and they reduced the arrears on 58 minutes through Matty Williamson.
They couldn’t find another to put pressure on their hosts and face the prospect of a trip to leaders Shildon on Saturday.

Carlisle City were also beaten in mid-week, going down 2-0 at Thornaby but those goals came in the last 15 minutes.
Lucas Casson put them ahead after 72 minutes and in the fifth minute of added time, with City pushing for an equaliser, James Sayer made the game safe for them.
City travel to Newcastle Benfield on Saturday while play-off chasing Kendal Town, who are fourth, have a home game against Birtley Town who are 10th.
