Cleator Moor Celtic ended a disappointing run of results with a hard-earned point from a 1-1 West Lancashire League draw at Coppull United.
Celtic hadn’t been in the contest for the first when they conceded the only goal on 39 minutes.
A great ball into the box saw a glancing header from Lewis Foster find the Celtic net.
The second-half was much better, however. It was Celtic who dominated, as they had the lion’s share of possession and deservedly drew level on 77 minutes.
Some hectic goalmouth action ended with a shot from Zack Martin glancing off Leon Dymtrowski’s chest to beat the home keeper.
After that all the chances went Celtic’s way with Dan Hill, Sam Stones and Brad Barwise all going close to grabbing a winner.
You can hear manager Gareth Agnew’s view below:
Whitehaven travelled with a young squad to Astley and Buckshaw United and were undone in the first five minutes.
Two important refereeing decisions went against the west Cumbrians and through no fault of their own they found themselves 2-0 down inside five minutes with both goals from Samir Sobeih.
Whitehaven reorganised and settled down but were hit by a superb strike on the half hour from Joe Ball so turned round 3-0 in arrears.
That was the end of the scoring as in the second half Whitehaven played the better football and although failing to create any real clear-cut chances were tidy and solid.
You can hear manager Brian Dawson’s reflections on the game below:
Millom travelled to Clitheroe and a game against Hurst Green who were immediately above them in the table.
But the South Cumbrians lost 4-2 and their two goals came in the final six minutes when the points were virtually wrapped-up.
Hurst Green had led 2-0 at the break with goals from Jordan Rawcliffe (8) and Harvey Monk (24).
It got worse after the break when Danylo Demitriev (52) and James Kemp (69) doubled the home advantage.
Millom reduced the arrears with goals from top scorer Ben McDonald (84) and Jed Philip (89).
In the semi-final of the Westmorland Senior Cup, Milnthorpe Corinthians had to go to penalties to see-off Kirkby Stephen after the tie had finished 1-1.
Corinthians needed an 88th minute equaliser from Zach Clarke to send the game straight to penalties where 16-year-old Joe Hemsley was the hero with a save in a 4-2 shoot out victory.
