A Cumbrian sanctuary is appealing for help after eight more donkeys were left at its gates since Christmas.
Barnhill Donkeys Retreat, at Shap, said it was launching the urgent appeal to help nurse the animals back to full health.
Linda Gilbert, of the retreat, said: “Donkeys don’t complain – they get used, abused and thrown away.
“It is down to us to rebuild their shattered lives and your donation will help us continue this vital work.
“Please think of us and help us continue to put the spring back into their steps.”
The sanctuary is run completely voluntarily and volunteers do a lot of work in the community.
School groups and other organisations visit Barnhill Donkeys Retreat and visitors are always greeted with kindness by the animals.
Sam Galloway, of Frame & Swift Veterinary Centre, said: “Many of these donkeys have arrived showing signs of severe disease, often due to what appears to be neglect.
“Some have dramatically overgrown feet and others have been extremely thin or showing advanced skin disease.
“In some cases, tests have revealed underlying disease, but in other cases there have been no signs of disease, suggesting that their poor condition is purely down to lack of provision of nutrition and shelter.
“Dental disease is often present and has resulted in some donkeys struggling to eat effectively, but this pain is usually quickly alleviated once dental treatment has been given. Sadly, there have been cases that have not responded to the care provided at Barnhill along with appropriate veterinary treatment.
“I have recently seen new arrivals with severe hoof problems, including laminitis.
“Donkeys suffering from laminitis require box rest while in the foot inflammation reduces. There is currently a very high pressure on shelter at Barnhill due to the influx of new cases. Additional stabling would be very beneficial to all donkeys, especially those suffering from hoof pain.
“The two most recent additions have been found to have significant liver disease and are suffering from laminitis. One also had a large dental overgrowth and periodontal disease. Both are currently on box rest.
“I have seen donkeys that have arrived at Barnhill in urgent need of food, farriery, veterinary care and just plenty of TLC.
” Many of these donkeys have subsequently thrived and have returned to good health due to the work and care that is provided at Barnhill Donkeys Retreat.”
The retreat said its weekly running costs were:
- Bedding – £105
- Feed – just over £200
- Vet and farrier – on average £200 to £400
