Senhouse Street Club are closing in on the West Cumberland Sunday League’s Division One title.
But they suffered a defeat in the latest round of group matches in the League Cup when they lost 5-3 at home to the Premier Division side Thornhill, who actually haven’t won a game in the top flight.
Thornhill won with goals from Connor Torney (2), Ben Mahaffy, Nathan Dryden and Harry Hodgson. Senhouse replied through Chris Williams, Joe McDowell and Brad Newell.
Also in the League Cup there were wins for Lowca Pirates and Workington Falcons.
The Pirates plundered six goal against the Sun after leading 5-1 at the break. Owen Woodburn (4), Kian Goulding and Harley Cueto were their scorers with Dan Hill responding for the home side.
Workington Falcons also had their game with Royal Oak won by half-time when they led 5-0. The only goal of the second-half was scored by the Oak’s Alan Sim. Dylan Bragg (3), Declan Moore and Jonny Cash had put the Falcons out of sight.
The other three games on Sunday were all in Division One where it seems to be a battle to see who is going to finish runners-up to Senhouse Street Club.
Mirehouse strengthened their claims with a decisive 7-0 win over Sun Inn Athletic with goals from Ryan Taylor, Ryan Smith, Braydon Walmsley, Kyle Bayliff, Lincoln Tunstall, Liam Elliot and Josh Atkinson.
Sun Inn could be their main rivals as they have four games in hand and trail by ten points.
They were 4-1 winners against Maryport with goals from Dan Pearson (3) and Kieran McCluskey. Veteran Steven Stoddart netted for Maryport.
In the other game the Zebras beat the Swan 5-0 with goals from Alistair Shaw-Hughes (2), Attlee Skillen, Mike Herbert and John Hoodless.
